Your skills: digital workshops, language support and more

Coloured pens and blank notebook

Never before have digital skills been so important. They have become essential to our academic studies, our personal development and much more.

The Digital Tuesdays online workshops, starting again on 20 October at 11am, are designed to support these different aspects of your digital lives. The topics of previous workshops have ranged from WordPress to wellbeing, and we’ll be delivering a varied programme again this term in order to best support you. Keep an eye on the Digital Tuesdays page to see what we have scheduled.

Coinciding with Open Access Week 2020, the first Digital Tuesdays workshop on 20 October is ‘Using Open Access resources for study’. You can find many publications, journals, research articles, books and theses that are free to read online. This workshop will introduce tools to help you discover scholarly publications and resources that are freely available to all, wherever you are, and look at techniques to evaluate materials that you find online. Book a place on this workshop.

And Tuesdays aren’t the only day of the week that skills support is available to you. From Monday to Friday during term you can book one-to-one writing support with one of our RLF fellows. The RLF (Royal Literary Fund) fellows are established professional writers who can help with any aspect of the writing process, from planning to drafting, constructing an argument and editing. They are able to comment on the writing style of work in progress, allowing you to improve your work before submission.

If English is your second language, ELAS (English Language for Academic Support) can also provide essential support. ELAS is designed to help students, with English as an additional language, improve their academic English and their understanding of British academic culture. They offer workshops, ‘time to write’ sessions and one-to-one tutorials throughout the academic year to students whose first language is not English. For further information and resources, eligible students can self-enrol on the ELAS Canvas site.

We know that many students have found these sessions invaluable and we hope that you do too. As an attendee commented on an ELAS workshop:

‘Thank you very much for the session today, which I’d genuinely say is one of the best language sessions I’ve had. Your input and extra time are really worthwhile.’

And finally, remember you can find plenty more resources on Skills Hub too.
