Your say: remember your Student Reps

Student Rep Jess in conversation

In September hundreds of students across campus were elected to become Student Reps. Since then Reps have been meeting regularly with staff to make sure student voices are being heard. Reps have met with senior management to discuss timetabling, value for money as well as IT and resources.

Jess, who represents second year American Studies students, became a Rep for the first time.

‘There were some things within my course that I wanted to change and I felt that the best way to do that was to become a Student Rep. I thought that being a Rep would help other people use their voice when they thought they couldn’t.’

As well as being a Student Rep in the School of History, Art History and Philosophy, Jess was elected to represent students on Senate – the highest democratic governing body at the University dealing with academic issues.

‘I’ve surprised myself with my opinions and how strongly I feel. It’s been nice to be really involved and talk to my lecturers about important things.’

Student Reps are an invaluable way for students to have their say about the way that courses and the wider University are run.

‘If you’ve got a problem with your course you go to your Student Rep. You have someone who can make it easier to make your opinion heard.’

The experience is also really valuable for the students who volunteer their time: ‘Being a Rep provides you with lots of opportunities. It’s a really good experience and encourages you to step outside of your comfort zone’.
