Returning to university after taking a break from studying can be overwhelming, especially if you are coming back to study a course different from your professional or previous academic experiences.
As someone who navigated life at Sussex after a long academic break, here are three key tips to help you during your studies at Sussex.
Start with having fun
It has been a long time since you sat in a lecture room as a student, and trust me when I say you may find it hard if you jump straight into the books without first connecting with your new environment. So, give yourself some time to have fun and settle into University life by attending welcome week events and orientation events. Join the campus and city tour and get to know your new environment.
One good way to start off as a student again is to know exactly where you are going on the first day of your lecture. It keeps you relaxed and confident and sets the tone for your new academic journey. So, if you have been planning on sitting out of the welcome week events, abort the mission because it all starts there. Have fun!
Speak up and seek help
One of the many things I have learned about Sussex is that you are never alone except if you deliberately choose to be. There is all-round support for all students from the institution, and all you have to do is utilise the support and resources provided to you. Before you find yourself breaking down under the realisation that it has been a long time since you felt the rigour of the academic environment, speak up. When you first meet your lecturers, let them know you have had a long break and would appreciate all the help they can offer. Visit the Student Centre and ask them for any assistance specific to your needs, and you will be directed to the right place. Additionally, start all of your assessments early so you have enough time to seek and make corrections from your lecturers.
Connect with the right people
It's important not to rush into making friends just to fit in. Be selective and connect with people who will positively impact your academic journey. Join societies and groups that align with your interests and goals. Utilize Sussex Connect to network with alumni and seek their guidance when needed. Join the Buddy Scheme to connect with someone whose goals align with yours or who needs support just like you do. Join or form study groups to gradually get you immersed in the academic world again. Building a supportive network is crucial for your success and wellbeing. These connections can offer academic support, social opportunities, and provide a greater sense of belonging and community.
By following these tips, you'll help to set yourself up for a successful and enjoyable experience at Sussex. Embrace the journey, take it one step at a time, and remember that it's okay to ask for help along the way. Welcome back to academia, and best of luck!
