The holiday season is upon us, and whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, the winter solstice or none of those, it’s a wonderful excuse to show appreciation to those around you.
Last week we took to Instagram (@SussexUni) to ask students for your favourite present you’ve ever given, and we have put together five thoughtful, affordable and sustainable gift ideas to inspire you.
Quality time with loved ones
Many of you will be going home for the holidays and have the chance to meet with family and friends you don’t usually see during term time. Make the most of it! Arrange to meet for a coffee, plan a movie or game night, or go for a walk in the park. And for those staying in Brighton, it’s also your chance to slow down a bit and spend more time with your friends. Check out our list of fun activities to do in Brighton during the holidays.
Plant cuttings from your own plants
Plants are one of my personal favourite presents for every occasion. They make a wonderful decoration, (hopefully) last longer than a flower bouquet, and purify the air. Your friend will also enjoy watching their new plant grow, and by sharing your cuttings, you’re also helping to reduce the CO2 footprint of importing new plants.
Books, books, books
You can never go wrong with a book! I’ve discovered new authors and genres that I might have never tried if a friend had not given me that book as a gift. Consider giving a favourite novel, a thought-provoking non-fiction book, or even a second-hand book from a local bookshop.
Treasure hunt in second-hand shops
Brighton has a great selection of second-hand and charity shops where you can find all sorts of hidden treasures. From a beautiful tagine for that friend who loves to cook to a vintage tea set for the Alice in Wonderland fan, there are always some unique and affordable presents waiting to be discovered.
Handmade gifts and treats
Tap in your creative side and make your own presents! Some of you mentioned making a personalised zine for their girlfriend, which sounds very creative and thoughtful. Somebody else said that their favourite present was the painted wooden spoon their children have given them, which is lovely. Whether it is creating a piece of art, knitting a scarf or whipping up some delicious homemade goodies, everybody appreciates the love and effort put into homemade gifts.
