Two talented Sussex undergraduates have won bronze medals at the UK's largest annual multi-sport event.
Sports Scholars Alice Torjussen and Wun Yan Huang (Theresa) received their medals for the badminton women’s doubles event at the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Nationals on Sunday (21 February).
Alice, a first-year Computing Science student, and Theresa, who is studying Business and Management, attended the weekend-long event in Sheffield with over 6,000 other students from around the country.
The BUCS Nationals is in its fourth year and is the biggest multi-sport event in the student sport calendar. The annual event brought together 10 individual BUCS Championship events over seven different venues in the city.
In addition to playing in the singles tournaments, Alice and Theresa were seeded in the doubles and played one game on the Saturday against the University of Nottingham, which saw them get through to the final 16. They continued their winning streak into the Sunday, beating higher seeded teams to sail through to the semi finals. For the semis, the pair were pitted against number two seeds Loughborough University and closely missed out on a spot in the final, losing 21-14, 21-18.
Alice and Theresa are supported by the Sports Scholarship Scheme, delivered by Sussexsport and generously funded by donation via the Sussex Fund. The Scheme paid for their entry into the tournament and also supports the student athletes with mentoring and training. Alice and Theresa are now preparing for a rematch against Loughborough and hope to even the score in their next event.
