Two second-year students from Sussex Law School have been praised by the Mayor of Brighton for their contribution to the work of Brighton Housing Trust (BHT).
Hannah Brown and Aidan Seymour-Butler were invited to Brighton Town Hall last month to meet the Mayor, Councillor Lynda Hyde, who thanked them for their volunteer work at BHT’s Advice Centre.
The pair undertake three hours of voluntary work every Wednesday and have been taught different aspects of housing law including deposit protection, legal aid, leases, how to interview clients, how to conduct a ‘without prejudice’ letter, and how to issue county court proceedings.
Speaking after their meeting with Councillor Hyde, Hannah said she felt privileged to have the extracurricular work recognised by the Mayor.
She said: “I was honoured to be invited for tea with the Mayor and to be thanked for our contribution to BHT and helping the homeless, but there is still plenty more that we can contribute.”
Hannah and Aidan, who have volunteered at BHT since October 2015, have committed to volunteering at the Trust for two years. Their work will continue throughout their third year, and they even hope to dedicate more time to the organisation during the summer break.
Brighton Housing Trust is a people-led organisation dedicated to combating and dealing with the consequences of homelessness, poverty and marginalisation across Brighton & Hove, Eastbourne, Hastings, and other areas of Sussex.
