A student at the University of Sussex has been awarded one of just 22 new national bursaries for promising future engineers.
Christopher Scott, in his first year of a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Sussex, is one of the first in the country to receive the new Engineering Horizons Bursary from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
The bursary scheme has been created to ensure that students and apprentices who have overcome obstacles or personal challenges get their chance to pursue their passion for engineering.
The bursary will provide Christopher and his fellow winners with at least £1,000 per academic year. They will also benefit from mentoring and work experience placements through the IET’s extensive networks.
The bursaries are supported by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, The Manly Trust , Engineers Trust (Worshipful Company of Engineers) and Mr. & Mrs Tubbs.
Faye Banks, Chair of the Engineering Horizons Panel, says: “By encouraging apprentices and students who are passionate about engineering, we know the bursary will put them on a path that is not only challenging and rewarding, but also vital to the UK economy. It was a very competitive process and all winners should be rightly proud of their achievements.”
