Brighton and Sussex are full of well-known attractions, but sometimes the best experiences are found off the beaten path. We took to Instagram to ask Sussex students to share your favourite local "hidden gems" – those special places that might not be in the guidebooks but are definitely worth a visit. Here are your top picks:
Cafés
It’s always good to get an insider recommendation are where you can grab a good coffee, and unsurprisingly cafés featured heavily in yours. Brighton’s Triple Point Coffee, with its locally roasted coffee, got a mention as did Sunbirds Deli on London Road with its Mediterranean-inspired food and Puzzle Bored Café, a unique, neurodiverse-aware coffee shop where you can enjoy puzzles and games in a quiet, calming environment.
Did you know Eastbourne is supposedly the sunniest place in the UK? If you fancy a day trip (or if you’re lucky enough to live there), it is worth checking out the view from the Beachdeck Café.
Pubs and bars
For those of you who prefer the atmosphere of a pub or bar, Hope and Ruin is a vibrant pub and live music venue in Brighton, known for its wide range of local craft beers and plant-based food, making it a lively spot to enjoy a night out with friends. Loading Bar, with its gaming theme, is perfect for socializing and enjoying a variety of drinks, catering to both video game and board game enthusiasts. Hidden cocktail bars like Twisted Lemon and Valentino offer unique experiences; Twisted Lemon, tucked away in Brighton's historic Lanes, is known for its classic and unique in-house creations, while Valentino, around the corner from Brighton Dome.
On campus retreats
Several of you name checked your favourite campus spots, whether that's a learning space like the first floor of the Fulton building or a quiet retreat like the pond by the Arts Buildings or the bench behind the Richmond Building. And who could forget the IDS coffee caramel frappe with choco drizzle? This nostalgic favorite, known for its delicious and indulgent flavor, is fondly remembered by those who tried it.
Outdoor spots
For those looking to get out in the open, the Seven Sisters Cliffs are a stunning natural landmark offering breathtaking views and scenic walks. Saltdean’s seaside walks offer fresh sea air and beautiful views, whether you’re looking for a short walk or a longer hike.
In the city, the rock stream in Preston Park’s is a tranquil spot perfect for relaxing by the water, whilst Queen’s Park, with its ample green space, is loved by students for its serene atmosphere.
