Develop the skills, knowledge, connections and passion to meet the global sustainability challenges we face – and help us become one of the most progressive and sustainable universities in the world.

Sussex Climate Leaders

Each year, we award up to five Climate Leader Scholarships to students who have shown outstanding climate leadership in their local communities. They work with us to deliver student and community engagement around tackling climate change and reaching net zero together. Find out more about this year's scholars.

Build your green skills

There’s so many sustainability-related education and extracurricular offerings that can help to boost your employability for the future. Read more about the ways we're preparing our graduates with the skills, knowledge and experience they'll need to thrive in an uncertain future.

Other ways to get involved

There's many ways to get involved in sustainability at Sussex, from your studies to volunteering with local causes.

Earn points for activism

The Spirit of Sussex Award celebrates your extra-curricular and voluntary achievements to earn you points towards either a Bronze, Silver or Gold Spirit of Sussex Award. There's a specific category for logging any sustainable or environment-based activities, including clothes swaps, supporting sustainable societies or climate activism.

Become an Eco Champion

We’re looking for Eco Champions who can spare an hour to encourage others to recycle and reuse in our campus cafés. Our new scheme aims to help our campus community to recycle more and use fewer disposable cups.

Choose active travel

Sustainable and active travel means walking, wheeling, running, cycling, or using public transport. By choosing to travel actively and sustainably, you can reduce your carbon footprint and work with your fellow students to help us reach net zero.

Save energy

We're reviewing the way we heat our buildings and use energy across our campus in a bid to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. There are many ways you can help us to do this.

Reduce, reuse and recycle

We all need to do more to reduce, reuse and recycle the waste that we produce in our daily lives. We currently recycle a third of our waste on campus – help us get this to 50% by the end of 2025.

Opt for low-carbon food

Making sustainable choices when we eat is a great way to fight climate change, as the United Nations estimate that farming and food production cause around a third of global greenhouse gas emissions.
