A pop-up ‘Global Photo Booth’ has helped to raise awareness of over 250 former students who generously volunteer as ambassadors for Sussex in their country of residence.
Photos of Alumni Consuls were added to a giant wall map in the Jubilee Building and students were invited to have their own photo taken with a Polaroid camera and add it to the map next to their home country.
Consuls from all over the world sent in their pictures to be included on the map, while students and staff from nearly 50 different countries had their photo taken throughout the week, highlighting the truly global spread of the Sussex community.
Countries represented ranged from from Australia, China and Nigeria to Colombia, Canada and Ukraine.
Sussex graduates Rachael Phelps (Law 2014) and Danny Hawkins (International Relations 2013) from the Alumni Relations team ran a daily quiz and spoke to students and staff about the important part that Consuls play in the University’s global community.
The role involves organising regional events, volunteering to help at international recruitment fairs and acting as an ambassador for Sussex all over the world.
The map also highlighted a selection of alumni events which have taken place around the world during the past year in the US, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Kenya, as well as the University’s upcoming graduation ceremony in Shanghai in March 2017.
One World Week is an annual celebration of the diversity of nationalities and cultures present at Sussex, jointly organised by the International Student Support Office and the Students’ Union.
Sussex has had a strong international perspective to its outlook since it was established in 1961 and the University now has alumni based in almost every country in the world.
Commenting on the Global Photo Booth, Sarah Cook, International Student Support Officer, said:
“Students were thrilled to learn that Sussex is represented so widely around the globe by Alumni Consuls, and many were keen to take part in the scheme themselves when they graduate.”
