Brighton & Hove Pride festival is an annual celebration of the city’s LGBTQ+ community.
A rainbow flag will be flying on the University of Sussex campus from today to celebrate some hugely important events coming up in Brighton over the next few weeks.
With Trans Pride due to take place between 22-24 July and then Brighton and Hove Pride taking place on the weekend of 4-6 August, the University will be fully supporting and embracing the diversity in our community.
Also taking place in Brighton this Sunday, 9 July, is Disability Pride. This event promises to be a proud celebration of the disabled community with a day of performances including live music, street food, education, arts and comedy at the heart of the city.
Supported by Brighton Pride and organised by Jenny Skelton, whose own daughter Charlie had suffered disability discrimination at a venue in the city during Brighton Pride 2016, the event is an important milestone for acknowledgement and acceptance of those living with disability.
Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sussex, explains:
“The University has always valued diversity and equal rights; this ethos underpins everything that we are as an institution.
“We are proud to support Disability Pride Brighton – the first of its kind in the UK - in addition to our continued support for Trans Pride and Brighton and Hove Pride”.
The flag will also mark the fact that the University is an official partner of this year’s Brighton & Hove Pride festival and will be staying up until early August as other Pride events take place over the coming weeks.
