Students and staff from the University of Sussex spruced up a popular street in central Brighton today (Wednesday 25 October).
A team of students, staff, council workers, residents and volunteers spent this afternoon sweeping, clearing and tidying at St Martin’s Place, off Lewes Road.
Adam Tickell, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, was one of the volunteers. He said: “It was great to take some time out today to help make this street an even nicer place to live. Good community living is all about recognising the many roles we can all play in being great neighbours and making this city such a lovely place to live.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here today with the team of volunteers and the local residents I spoke to were delighted with the difference made to the area.
“I’d like to thank our Housing team for organising this initiative and also City Clean for being such enthusiastic partners.”
In the past year, University volunteers have also tidied Viaduct Road, Beaconsfield Road, Washington Street and Riley Road.
The University has expanded its community engagement work over the past two years and has made regular street cleans a key part of this activity.
A ‘Living in the community’ leaflet has been issued to all students to help make sure streets stay looking good all year round. It contains some simple tips, such as the importance of promptly taking bins out and in, separating recycling, and getting to know neighbours.
