Project 36, an Enactus project founded by Economics and International Development student Chris Youngman, has been shortlisted for a national Green Gown award.
The Green Gown Awards, administered by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC), are a global initiative established in 2004 to recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges and celebrate best practice within the sector.
Finalist submissions for this year’s UK and Ireland awards range from initiatives that tackle modern slavery to harnessing parent power in the fight against inequality, with 87 submissions shortlisted across 12 categories.
Project 36, a research-based project that aims to use social enterprise as a tool for sustainable change, is one of eight finalists shortlisted in the Enterprise category, alongside submissions from Brighton, Edinburgh, Essex, Keele, Kent, Newcastle and Nottingham.
The project, named after the 36% of women of child-bearing age affected by iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) in the central Nepalese region of Tanahun, has been working with the village of Paimey in the region to reduce IDA and create jobs in the process. A team of 15 students from the University of Sussex Business School have been brainstorming ideas and planning the project’s implementation phase, which will reach its peak in January next year.
Economics and International Development BA student Chris Youngman, founder of Project 36, is delighted at being shortlisted: “This success has galvanised the team, who will prepare harder than ever to make the implementation of social enterprise as successful as possible. The next academic year will see Project 36 into the most important phase so far, and we are always looking to recruit enthusiastic and knowledgeable students to our team, so please get in touch if you’d like to get involved!”
Winners of this year’s UK and Ireland Green Gown Awards will be announced at the awards ceremony at the National Railway Museum in York on 8 November 2018. Best of luck to Project 36 and all those involved!
