Stronger Together: Inclusive Sussex

This year the Olympics and Paralympics were special in that, despite the pandemic, they managed to bring together athletes from over 200 countries. The performances, passion and positivity of athletes of all types and abilities united those who were taking part and the spectators globally. I have been moved by their motto which was “Stronger Together”. It recognises the power of sport in bringing people together, a celebration of resilience, respect and unity.
Both the Olympics and the Paralympics call for a change to break barriers of discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, age, gender, physical and mental impairment or any other identity. As an Institution they challenge and inspire us to see beyond what might divide us and to focus on what unites us as one team, one community.
As we continue to promote an Inclusive Sussex culture, there is a message for each one of us to translate the inspiration into improved fitness, capitalise on our talents, particularly in sports and invest in healthy lifestyles.
As we move into a new academic year let us use sports to promote inclusion.
Sussexsport welcomes all staff and students from all backgrounds and abilities, respecting and nurturing a sense of belonging.
Let us encourage each other to take up sport and/or improve our physical fitness and help realise that we move forward when we move together.
