Please read through the information below about campus activity and facilities on Monday 19 September, the day of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral. We also recommend you read our previous update from 14 September.
Campus facilities
Although the state funeral will be a public holiday, many campus facilities will be continuing to operate to ensure students can access the on-campus services, facilities and support they may need. You can view opening times via the Student Hub.
Welcome Week
Welcome Week activity originally planned for Monday 19 September will now take place later that week, and for an updated academic induction timetable go here.
The University of Sussex Students’ Union also has a wide range of events and activities taking place throughout the week, and Falmer House, where they are based will be open all week too.
Screening of the state funeral on campus
Students who would like to watch the state funeral with others are invited to come together at 10.30am at the Jubilee lecture Theatre on Monday 19 September.
Professor Kelly Coate, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Education and Students, and Jayne Aldridge, Director for the Student Experience, will also be joining students at the screening.

After the state funeral – Boundary walk
At 12.30, Professor Kelly Coate will meet any students outside of the Jubilee building who would like to join her in a Boundary walk around our campus. The Boundary walk is an opportunity to get some fresh air in the beautiful countryside surrounding our campus, as well as a chance to meet and be with other students.
Books of condolence
The University’s multi-faith Meeting House will be open to all from 8am to 3pm. There are books of condolence to sign on the ground floor and upstairs, as well as an online book of condolence on the University website.
For those who wish to spend quiet time, there will be quiet spaces made available. Members of the Chaplaincy team will be available for those who would like to speak to someone.
Support for students
Core wellbeing and support services will continue to be available on the day of the state funeral, and can be accessed primarily through the Student Centre. If you find yourself in need of further support of any kind, you may wish to contact our support services or speak with a member of our Chaplaincy.
