Hello,
This week I want to explore what we mean by your student experience at Sussex.
It’s something you may not think of when you see the opportunities we share in these updates – such as activities that are run by Sussex staff and students to help make your time at Sussex the best it can be. The teaching, support services (see ‘Help and advice’) and campus facilities you make use of day to day are a huge part of your student experience too.
To shape the student experience opportunities on offer, we listen to your feedback and use it to make improvements that will benefit you and your fellow students. We also provide opportunities for students to work in partnership with staff to help make improvements together.
You can find out ways to share your feedback, and in a couple of weeks we will be inviting all taught students to take part in mid-module evaluation surveys. This is an opportunity to let module convenors and tutors know what is going well and what could be done differently, so that together we can make improvements and appreciate the great teaching and learning that goes on at Sussex.

Skills Hub – helping you to succeed in your studies
The Skills Hub is your go-to place for online advice on essay writing, referencing, plagiarism or revising for exams. Following student and staff feedback, it has been redesigned to ensure it provides helpful and accessible guidance for you to develop the necessary academic skills you need to succeed at Sussex. Take a look at the resources today.
Have you completed your registration?
The deadline for completing registration is Friday 14 October. If you’ve not already done so, visit Sussex Direct to complete your registration as soon as you can. Don’t forget to include your phone number so we can contact you in case of emergency – you can update this through the ‘personal’ and ‘contact information’ tabs.
If you are expecting a maintenance loan from the Students Loans Company, this will only be released once your registration is complete.
If you had originally indicated as part of registration that you were going to be arriving late, and now you have already arrived on campus, please update your records on Sussex Direct.
Free Covid-19 vaccination clinic on Wednesday 26 October
The University will be hosting a free mobile Covid-19 vaccination clinic on campus on Wednesday 26 October, find out if you require a Covid vaccination from the Student Hub vaccination event listing. We strongly encourage all our students to get vaccinated to protect our campus community and those in the city.
Students’ Union elections – time to choose your representatives
The Students’ Union is run by students for students, helping to promote the student voice at Sussex. You can now vote for your Students’ Union representatives until 12 noon on Friday 14 October. Positions include part-time officers, student reps and sustainability champions. I really encourage you to have your say about who represents you this year.
Help make an even better student experience at Sussex
You’re invited to the free Co-creation Conference on 18 October organised by the Connector programme, a University scheme where staff and students work as equal partners to improve student experience at Sussex. At the conference, you will take part in a range of workshops, share your views and improve your skills in group work and public speaking. Book your free spot now.
Online mental health support through Togetherall
Togetherall is one way you can explore your feelings in a safe and supportive environment – simply register for the online platform using your academic email address. Remember you can also visit the Health, Support and Wellbeing area of the Student Hub for information on university services.
Inclusive Sussex: In Conversation with Dan Gillespie Sells of 'The Feeling'
On 1 November at 6pm, musician and songwriter Dan Gillespie Sells will be talking about "Liberation and Storytelling" in his life and career, alongside a panel of Sussex staff and students. Dan is an LGBTQ+ activist and co-creator of the hit West End stage musical Everybody's Talking About Jamie. Book your free ticket to join us at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts on campus.
