Students at Business School welcome week event
Last week, nearly 1,500 new students joined the University of Sussex Business School from the UK and across the world during Welcome Week as we began the new academic year with a variety of Welcome Week activities.
On Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 September, students received a warm welcome from Professor Steve McGuire, Dean of the Business School, and Professor Gabriela Cagliesi, Associate Dean for Education and Students, as part of an introduction to the Business School.
Arrivals then had the opportunity to meet their tutors, network with current students, and talk with Business School alumni. New students were also able to meet their Student Academic Success Advisors, who held sessions each day in the Jubilee lecture theatre, helping to prepare students for the year ahead.
Across both days, our Welcome Café offered an introduction to a wide range of Professional Services teams, situated at dedicated stands, helping students with queries, and promoting their services.
Other events taking place across campus this year included the Freshers Fair, where students enjoyed music, free food samples, and giveaways, as well as discovering a range of university-wide sports clubs, support services, societies, and campaign groups.
Professor McGuire said:
“It’s my pleasure to welcome so many new and returning students from the UK and overseas to our top-ranked and double-accredited Business School. With over 5,500 students, we are the largest School at the University of Sussex. With teaching and research strengths including the future of work, international trade, energy, and climate change, our students are well supported in their academic studies. Our research and scholarship inform and shape our teaching.
“For many new students, starting university is an exciting time but it can also sometimes be overwhelming. My advice to get the most out of academic and student life is first, manage your time, there is a lot of demand for it and learn how to budget your time effectively. Secondly, be a joiner - join clubs and societies. Don’t feel you have to make this journey on your own. All staff at the Business School want your time with us to be fulfilling, interesting, and enjoyable, and we will do what we can to support you.”
