The University of Sussex has been ranked =14th in the world for Equality and =32nd in the world for Health and Wellbeing in the newly released QS World Rankings: Sustainability 2025.
Overall, Sussex is ranked =63rd globally. Whilst lower than last year’s placing of =26th, this reflects the fact that there are now significantly more global institutions included in the rankings. Over 350 additional institutions have been added to the rankings, which now totals 1,744 universities.
Even though our overall ranking has dropped due to this increased competition, we have increased our score in some categories.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sasha Roseneil said: “Our efforts to progress a sustainable equality agenda have been recognised by securing a fantastic ranking of joint 14th globally. It is also excellent to be joint 32nd globally for Health and Wellbeing which recognises our impact on our students and society more widely.
“We are carefully examining the reasons for our decline this year in the aggregate ranking, which is partly due to significantly more institutions joining the rankings this year, increasing the competition. Our new strategy, Sussex 2035, will see us committing the University to a broad and deep programme of work on environmental sustainability and human flourishing, which will produce wide-ranging impact over time.”
The University has already identified that some of the drop in our performance in the rankings was due to an increase in energy demand after the Covid-19 pandemic and a reduction in renewable energy produced due to some solar panels failing. We are now looking into these results further to investigate where we can make changes. We will examine our excellent performance in the Equality and Health and Wellbeing categories to apply learnings to other categories in future years.
