Last week, Sussex Uni Food hosted a lively Social Kitchen event at Eat Central, where students gathered to learn how to make Nasi Goreng - a popular Indonesian fried rice dish - served with homemade pickled cucumbers. The session was led by Chef Mike and Chef Kips, and delivered in an interactive “show and tell” style.
Students picked up essential kitchen skills, including how to handle a knife safely and effectively. They also learned practical tips, such as how adding a pinch of salt to garlic can help it break down faster when mincing.
The Nasi Goreng was made using simple, everyday ingredients - part of an initiative to reduce food waste by encouraging students to cook with what they already have at home. Chef Mike shared that by using a variety of familiar cupboard spices, vegetables, and proteins you can create your own version of the dish.
To finish on a sweet note, students were treated to a quick and delicious two-ingredient chocolate mousse. Everyone left with recipe cards for both dishes, ready to recreate them in their own kitchens.
Social Kitchen events are all about building confidence in the kitchen, discovering easy and tasty recipes, and picking up useful tips to make home cooking more enjoyable.
