Former Sussex LLB Graduate (2021), Tom Rylatt, has been elected as a 'People's Deputy' to Guernsey's parliament - known as the 'States of Deliberation'. This is the Guernsey equivalent of being elected as an MP in the UK. At 25, Tom is the third youngest deputy to have been elected in Guernsey, and the youngest since 1982.

Tom is a member of the Forward Guernsey party, Guernsey's only current registered party - party politics being much newer in Guernsey than in the UK. He stood for election because he was concerned that young people and families have long been underrepresented in Guernsey's parliament. They are now increasingly leaving the island due to a lack of opportunity and affordable housing. Tom wants to make Guernsey a place where the next generation can see their futures again.
Speaking about his time at Sussex, Tom said:
"Studying Law at Sussex - and participating in the wide range of advocacy competitions on offer - opened up doors I could never have anticipated. The public speaking, analytical and advocacy skills I developed there have been invaluable, both in the courtroom and now as a member of Guernsey's parliament."
Tom’s election manifesto (shown) - distributed to every registered house in Guernsey - included a picture of one of the Sussex moots he competed in.
