Nick (Business and Finance BSc with a Professional Placement Year) | Current Role: Assistant Manager, Deloitte
As the new academic year approaches, now is the perfect time for second-year students to start applying for Professional Placements, but why should you consider doing one?
We caught up with Nick (Business and Finance BSc) to learn how his Professional Placement Year at Deloitte shaped his future career. The experience not only strengthened his technical and soft skills, but also led to securing a graduate role.
Discover how Nick made the most of his Professional Placement Year, and the valuable advice her has for future students considering a placement option.
A Placement at Deloitte
What was your role, and what did your responsibilities involve?
I undertook a Professional Placement Year within Deloitte’s Audit and Assurance service line. My responsibilities primarily involved participating in external audits for listed companies and large private organisations. Although I was a Placement student, I received the same training and was given the same responsibilities as a first-year graduate/analyst. My key responsibilities included performing audit testing on specific Financial Statement Line Items and liaising directly with client management to address audit-related queries and requests.
What was the most valuable part of your experience?
The most valuable aspect of my placement year was the breadth and depth of experience I gained. It enabled me to strengthen both my soft skills - such as time management and communication - and technical skills, such as Excel proficiency and a solid understanding of financial reporting and accounting standards. This hands-on experience has been pivotal for my professional development.
Transitioning into a Graduate Role
How did your placement prepare you for your current role?
I was offered a graduate position at the end of my Professional Placement Year and have since rejoined Deloitte in the same service line. Deloitte provides an automatic promotion to returning Placement students, so I am now a third-year graduate (Assistant Manager), having been in the role for just under a year. The placement thoroughly prepared me for this transition, as my current responsibilities closely mirror those I undertook during my placement year—albeit with increased complexity and the added responsibility of coaching more junior team members.
What skills or experiences helped you make the transition?
My advice to anyone making the transition into a graduate role is to maintain a positive attitude, be proactive, and remain eager to learn and grow. Demonstrating these qualities throughout the placement allowed me to develop effectively and contribute meaningfully to the audits I supported.
The Impact of a Professional Placement Year
How has the experience shaped your career goals or plans?
My placement offered valuable insight into the accountancy profession. Due to the positive nature of the experience, I have chosen to pursue a long-term career in this field and remain committed to progressing within it.
Have you gained any new insights or made important connections?
During the year, I collaborated closely with professionals across Deloitte UK and even within the global network. This included working directly with clients and their finance teams. As a result, I have built a strong professional network - both internally at Deloitte and externally - particularly with former colleagues who have transitioned into roles in financial reporting and banking.
Advice for Students
What would you tell current students considering a placement?
I would strongly encourage students to apply to as many roles as they find genuinely interesting - while maintaining a high standard across all applications. My placement year was one of the most rewarding opportunities I’vehad, and significantly eased the pressure of job hunting in final year (as I had already secured a graduate offer).
It’s essential to stay resilient and determined throughout the application process. The application journey demands considerable time and effort, but the payoff is well worth it. In my case, the Deloitte application was one of the last I submitted after facing numerous rejections. I was close to giving up, but persevered and managed to achieve the offer.
