Emily Jones (International Development BA) who did a Career Lab UK Summer Internship at Tech Takeback
By Emily Jones (International Development BA)
Applying to and embarking on a Summer Internship
I applied to the Career Lab UK Summer Internships programme to gain industry-relevant experience that aligns with my career goals of reducing inequality within society. I was drawn to Tech-Takeback’s mission of collecting unused or unwanted tech, refurbishing it, and donating it to individuals who are digitally excluded. Their work enables people to access essential resources on the internet whilst also reducing e-waste and protecting the environment. This mission aligns perfectly with my personal values around social progress, environmental sustainability, and waste reduction.
Hardly any of my friends or peers knew University-run programmes like Career Lab existed (and that they’re paid!). Once I found out, the application process itself was straightforward. I updated my CV and spent a couple of weeks crafting tailored cover letters for each role I applied to. Although time-consuming, it paid off - I was offered two different internships and ultimately chose Tech-Takeback because it aligned best with my long-term goals.
Since November 2024, I’ve volunteered as a Circular Economy Research Assistant with Circular Brighton and Hove, so I was already familiar with local waste management and circular economy initiatives. The internship with Tech-Takeback deepened my understanding of social value - a way to measure social development beyond just financial metrics, whichfocuses on improving wellbeing for individuals, communities, and the environment.
I really enjoyed being shown the inner workings of the entire business. I spent time across various departments - finance, the warehouse, logistics, research, marketing – and I’ve come away from the experience with a broad and versatile skillset, as well as valuable cross-functional insight.
I also really appreciated the flexibility of the role and the fact that it wasn’t limited to remote work. We had access to the company’s shared workspace, spent days at the warehouse observing the technicians as they repaired and refurbished laptops, and even attended events in London! It was a genuinely enjoyable experience.
Overcoming impostor syndrome
During the first few weeks, I experienced intense imposter syndrome. Even though I had relevant experience going in, I constantly felt like I was out of my depth and didn’t truly deserve the opportunity. Eventually, I opened up to my manager about how I was feeling, and she reassured me that I was doing an amazing job and should feel really proud. That moment of affirmation changed everything: it made me feel instantly more confident. I only wish I’d spoken up sooner!
For anyone struggling with anxiety or imposter syndrome: talk about it. You're not alone. After doing some reading, I found that 71 per cent of 20- to 29-year-olds, especially women, feel imposter syndrome within the workplace - and 7 out of 10 women have had feelings of imposter syndrome at some point in their career. It is normal!
Looking to the future
Since completing my internship, I’ve been offered a permanent part-time position at Tech-Takeback while I study for my Master’s degree (MSc International Business and Development) starting in September.
The hands-on experienceI gained during my internshipis incredibly valuable when trying to break into competitive sectors. Too often, entry-level roles still demand a minimum of one year’s experience. Participating in the Career Lab UK Summer Internship Programme (as well as the Student Consultancy programme) has given me a head start - it shows that I can work effectively in teams, contribute to a professional environment, and take initiative. Plus, it’s paid!
