Listening to student voice
A brand-new outdoor platform lift is now open, connecting the lower level of Library Square with the Library’s accessible entrance, the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and the Arts buildings.
Developed in response to student feedback, the lift provides - for the first time in the University’s history - a direct, step-free route from the lower lawns of Library Square to the Library’s accessible entrance.
This improvement makes a real difference for staff, students and visitors with mobility needs, offering a much more straightforward and accessible alternative to what was previously a lengthy and indirect journey.
Enhancing campus connectivity
Improving access to our Grade II* Listed Library has long been a shared ambition. The new lift offers a more welcoming and direct alternative to the previously indirect step-free route, while respecting the historic nature of the building.
As well as improving access to the Library, the lift creates a more inclusive and efficient route to IDS and the Arts buildings, helping to strengthen connectivity across this area of campus.
Signage and contrasting colour identifiers will be installed on the lift soon, plus we have plans to add new steps next to it- planning permission is currently being sought for these.
How it works
The lift is for anyone who needs step-free access.
It is located next to the Arts A lecture theatres, opposite the Library and IDS. From the lower level of Library Square, the lift takes users up to Library Road. From there, a short path leads to the Library’s accessible entrance, with onward routes to IDS and the Arts buildings.
The open-air, platform-style lift is operated using push buttons. Doors to the lift automatically open when the entry button is pushed and released. To operate the lift, press and hold the ‘up’ or ‘down’ button until the lift comes to a stop, after which, the door will automatically open again.
