Students and staff are invited to take part in Stop Food Waste Day at Sussex, hosted by Sussex Uni Food in Eat Central on Wednesday 29 April from 12pm.
This interactive event brings sustainability to life through food, offering a chance to try some creative, low-waste dishes and pick up practical tips for reducing food waste at home.
Try low-waste dishes
At the heart of the event is a menu designed to challenge how we think about everyday ingredients. Come along and try our:
- Banana skin curry with wonky veg (£2)
- Free freshly baked banana bread
These recipes showcase how ingredients often thrown away, like fruit skins and vegetable trimmings, can be transformed into nutritious, great-tasting meals.
Learn how to reduce your food waste
Throughout the afternoon, the Sussex Uni Food team will be sharing simple, realistic ways to cut down on waste in your own kitchen. From using every edible part of your ingredients to repurposing leftovers, you’ll come away with tips that can help you:
- Save money
- Reduce environmental impact
- Make the most of your food
Keep an eye out for the banana bread stall, where you can learn more about low-waste cooking techniques.
Teaming up with Tenzing energy
A team from Tenzing energy will be on-site with a stall focused on sustainability, offering further insights and advice on how to reduce your own food waste.
Why it matters
Food waste is a major global issue. Around one-third of all food produced each year is lost or wasted, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing waste isn’t just good for the planet – it also has important social and economic benefits. In fact, just a quarter of the food wasted globally could feed hundreds of millions of people.
Be part of the change
Stop Food Waste Day is about giving food a second life and inspiring long-term behaviour change. By rethinking what we throw away, we can all play a part in tackling one of the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges.
Join us in Eat Central on Wednesday 29 April and discover how good food doesn’t have to go to waste.
