The University of Sussex has won the prestigious Green Flag Award for 2026, marking the ninth year that Sussex has won the award.
Our Falmer campus is managed and maintained by the Estates Grounds team, working alongside groups such as Sustainability and the School of Life Sciences to balance our green spaces to be accessible and practical for work and study, while ensuring that native pollinators and other wildlife can flourish within our unique South Downs environment.
The University has been recognised amongst other East Sussex green spaces for a variety of environmental initiatives including naturalised wildflower gardens, scattered seeding into amenity grassland areas, and extensive biodiversity mapping.
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Green Flag Award, which continues to set the international benchmark standard for the management of green spaces.
