Studying abroad in Europe

Sussex has a large number of institutional partnerships across Europe.

Universities are available in the following destinations:

Many of our European agreements in this region are subject specific. See the tables below for details. Unless stated otherwise, they offer a wide range of modules taught in English, so you can study there even if you do not speak another language. If a university says ‘Flexible’ it means that you can also apply to study there as long as you can find suitable modules in your field.

If you are a joint honours student, you can apply to study at a partner university where we have an agreement in one of your subjects (they may also have modules taught in English in your other subject).

This region is great for those students who may be considering to learn or expan thei rlanguage skills. Students doing the full year may be able to take language courses (Spanish, Swedish, Polish, Italian, French etc.) as part of their studies.

Academic programme

At most European partners you will be expected to start your studies in September (if you are studying for a year or Autumn term) or January/February (if you are studying for Spring term). There are a few exceptions to this, such as Germany (where classes start in October and finish at the end of July). Contact our Global Mobility team for more information.

The choice of modules taught in English will vary depending on the partner university. At some, you will find a wider selection of modules and for other partners these may be limited. You should research the partner universities fully to find what modules you can study. You may find that some universities offer cultural modules designed specifically for international students.

This region is also great for those students who may be considering to learn or expand their language skills. Students doing the full year may be able to take language courses (Spanish, Swedish, Polish, Italian, French etc.) as part of their studies.

You will be required to study a minimum number of credits:

  • term abroad is 30 ECTS (equal to 60 Sussex Credits)
  • year abroad is 60 ECTS (equal to 120 Sussex Credits).

Living costs

Living costs differ greatly depending on the location of your studies. Cities like Prague and Valencia will be a more affordable option for some compared to Oslo or Amsterdam, for example. How much you spend will depend on your rent, bills, food, and other living expenses such as commuting, books and supplies, and your own lifestyle.

Accommodation

You will likely need to find your own accommodation.

In big cities like Amsterdam, housing can be in short supply, so you will need to be very pro-active and make use of all the resources given to you.

You may wish to seek advice from the host university, speak with former or current study abroad students and research student groups online. Contact the Sussex Abroad team for more information.

If you are planning looking for a place in the private sector, be prepared to travel to your host destination early. Some universities may have university-managed accommodation you can apply to, so research what option suits you best.

How to apply

You'll apply for a place through the Sussex Abroad team, usually in the first term of the year before you are planning to go abroad.

The institutions you can apply to are split into two categories (A and B), indicated in the tables below. There is no difference in the standard of education between the two. Category A universities tend to be the more popular destinations. To avoid disappointment, you must only include a maximum of two category A universities on your application. You should be prepared to study at any of the universities listed in your application.

Find out how to apply.

Availabilty

Important: Not all of our partner universities are available every year, and the list below is subject to change.

Many of these institutions have very limited availability, so we cannot guarantee places will always be available. Where universities only have 1 or 2 spaces available, we have indicated this with a ‘*’. You are encouraged to keep your options open when selecting the institutions you’re interested in studying at.
