Unibuddy Communities

Somtochi: I would definitely recommend it, I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, it’s a good way to have a feel of the University before joining, and get to know more about your course if you do find people on there that are doing your course.

Jamie: When I joined Sussex in first year, Unibuddy was great because I got to meet people before joining University. I met some people who I ended up living with in my second and third year, which was really nice. I got to meet people who were on my course, and yeah, connect with people, bond over our shared love of Film Studies, which was great. I would absolutely recommend it, especially going into University - you can continue using it throughout if you want to get into new things or meet new people, but when you join in the first place it’s a really good opportunity and platform to get to know people.

Jane: I think as an International student it’s really hard to find your place on campus, and maybe feel like you can envision yourself here, but I think by joining Unibuddy and kind of meeting people and, all of that, it kind of gave me my first look into - that could be me one day! And, you know, fast forward a year later and here I am. So I think it’s definitely something you should try and maybe you can find a community.

Maya: I think people should join the Unibuddy Community Applicants Community because you get to not only talk to other applicants, and you know make some friends, but you also get to talk to ambassadors such as ourselves, and we can answer any and every question you have, especially if you come to one of the Open Days and you forgot to ask something, you can always go back on the Community and ask us.

Lisa: I joined the Unibuddy Community before coming to Sussex because I really wanted to be able to connect with people who were going to study the same course as me. And as well I was really interested in having the opportunity to talk to student ambassadors, more of a peer-to-peer kind of talk, which was really good. I found it really easy to use, it’s a sort of really safe - because you don’t have to give your phone number or anything, and there are communities as well - I was able to actually create the community for my Masters so people joined in and I could connect with some people which made my first day so much easier and less stressful, because I already knew a few faces.

Shevi: My experience was great, I got to connect with people all over the world and I feel like, even if it wasn’t their subject that was directly related to mine, we found common ground between languages or countries we might have visited. It’s always great to help people and let them know there’s easier ways to access Sussex like, than they might think.

Iona: Before coming to Sussex I was in the Psychology Undergraduate Community, I found it was a really good opportunity to meet other students and find people in advance before coming to uni. I would absolutely recommend it to any student, I mean I think especially if you’re slightly more nervous about meeting people, or having the chance to do that at uni.

Lisa: It’s also been useful during the application, registration and visa process, because for any doubts or any stresses that I had, I could share it with other people who were going through the same process, which made it really easy.

Jakub: I think when I joined it, I was like “Oh, I don’t know who to…who I’m going to find, who I’m going to go to lectures with.” But joining the Communities, the Ask An Ambassador [group], the subject ones…it’s a really great thing to do, and I really enjoyed it.
