A rainbow flag is flying on the University of Sussex campus this week to mark the fact that the University is an official partner of this year’s Brighton & Hove Pride festival.
Brighton & Hove Pride festival is an annual celebration of the city’s LGBTQ+ community, and is one of the major events in Brighton’s calendar.
Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sussex, explains: “The University has always valued diversity and equal rights. Thankfully much has changed in the past fifty years since homosexuality was decriminalised, however issues of equality still exist today.
“We’re supporting Brighton Pride because we stand for what Pride stands for – we both want to change things.”
The University is celebrating its partnership with Pride by flying a rainbow flag and handing out rainbow‑coloured gifts this Friday (12 May) as part of the annual ‘Deadline Day’ celebrations, when final-year students traditionally hand in their coursework.
Sussex staff and students will be joining the festivities on 5 August, and the University will have a float in this year’s Pride parade.
