We are proud to mark South Asian Heritage Month, (18 July – 17 August) as a moment to celebrate the diverse histories, cultures, and contributions of South Asian communities in the UK and beyond.
This celebration encompasses India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives and was established in the UK in 2020. The month aims to raise awareness and appreciation for South Asia’s diverse cultural heritage. It seeks to bridge cultural gaps, promote inclusivity, and highlight South Asians' contributions in various fields.
Theme and Events
This year’s theme, “Roots to Routes,” invites us to reflect on the journeys, past and present, that shape our identities and build our shared future. It’s a call to explore how traditions, migrations, family histories, and cultural influences have travelled through time to arrive where we are today.
The theme explores:
- Migration & Movement – Journeys of individuals and communities across time and place
- Heritage & Tradition – Languages, food, festivals, and customs passed through generations
- Identity & Belonging – Embracing multiple identities and shared experiences
- Legacy & Future – Honouring those who came before us and paving the way forward
- Community & Influence – Celebrating South Asian voices in education, health, arts, politics, and more
A large number of online and in-person events are taking place across the UK which include cultural festivals and performances, film screenings, educational workshops and lectures, culinary experiences and community and social events. Details of events taking place can be found here: Events List - South Asian Heritage Trust
