Keeping you informed during severe weather on campus

As extreme weather events in the UK become more common, there’s greater potential for campus activity to be disrupted by high or low temperatures, flooding, or stormy conditions. We want to clarify how we’ll contact you in these circumstances.
Before the severe weather arrives
We’ll make efforts to give staff and students as much notice as possible of any likely disruption. Depending on what weather forecasts are available, the day before we will aim to email all managers reminding them of the severe weather procedures. And if it’s clear that campus activities will be disrupted, we’ll email all staff and students in advance of this and post a news story on the Staff Hub and Student Hub.
On the day of the severe weather
The University Executive Team will make an early morning decision about whether any campus operations need to be scaled back. The news story on the Staff Hub and Student Hub will be updated by 7.30am detailing which services will remain available and what facilities will remain open on campus. This news will also be communicated via the following channels:
Depending on the specific circumstances, we may also use these additional channels:
- email to all staff and students
- internal and external digital screens
- push notification via the Sussex Mobile app
- telephone answerphone message via the University switchboard
If the severe weather persists
The University will continue to update the news article and web pages with significant developments and details of campus services that are affected. The Internal Communications team will also actively monitor social media channels and the internalcomms@sussex.ac.uk mailbox in order to respond to queries.
More information
Our actions in response severe weather will be informed by updates from the Met Office UK weather warnings and BBC Weather (Falmer) websites.
