Campus is home to some new outdoor artwork, featuring illustrations, paintings, drawings, and photography from Sussex students, staff, and alumni.
Outdoor art can be found all over campus, from Turner Prize winner Helen Cammock’s installation to Roma artist Jake Bowers’ metal sculpture of a Gypsy horse, so what better way to brighten up our West Slope construction site than showcasing the creativity and talent of Sussex through art.
Wrapped around our new Health and Wellbeing Centre and student accommodation buildings, the vibrant artworks reflect the spirit of Sussex, taking inspiration from our surrounding landscape and community. If you haven't already visited, we recommend heading up towards the Student Centre where you can admire the artwork and see the progress of our new West Slope buildings as they take shape.
Meet the artists
Highlights from the latest installation include PhD graduate Tunde’s photographs of African students in their indigenous attires. Tunde says, “The University has been part of my life for the past nine years and it’s a huge pleasure and honour to be asked by the University to share my work.
“The artwork, Ethiopia, is part of a larger body of work entitled ‘Not a Country’ in which I captured African students at Sussex in their indigenous attires between 2018 and 2024. The essence of the photo series is to recognise the significance of fabrics as a representation of a community’s shared identity across the African continent and to acknowledge the material culture of international students.”
The installation also showcases astrophotography by Physics and Astronomy Lecturer Darren Baskill, featuring long-exposure shots that capture mesmerising star trails and the occasional badger cameo.
And, we’ve added a colourful photo opportunity! Snap a picture in front of our rainbow wings and don’t forget to tag us on Instagram using #SussexPOV.
To learn more about the artworks, head to the Student Centre and catch our virtual gallery on the screens.
West Slope
The artwork bordering the West Slope development will be in place until 2026, when our new Health and Wellbeing Centre and the first student accommodation rooms are due to open.
