Studying abroad in Latin America
By studying abroad in Latin America you will experience a rich and colourful culture, as well as the hospitality and warmth of the people there.
Universities are available in the following destinations:
- Colombia
- Mexico.
Our exchange agreements with universities at these destinations are subject-specific. These are great institutions for Global School students as well as Business and Management students. Explore the table below to see what opportunities are available in your field. Modules in your field will be taught in English unless specified otherwise.
If you are a joint-honours student, you can apply to study at a partner university where we have an agreement in one of your subjects. They may also have modules taught in English in your other subject.
When allocating, the Global Mobility team will consider first those students who have some Spanish language.
Academic programme
The academic year works differently to the UK.
If you are applying to study abroad for the full year, you will likely travel in July until June of the following year. There will be a break between semesters which may last between one and two months, depending on the university.
If you are studying abroad for a term, you will need to pay close attention to the semester system. For the Autumn term, you will study during their semester 2 (starting in mid-July). For the Spring term, this will be semester 1 (starting in January or February).
To study in this region it is important that you pass all your modules at Sussex beforehand. You should avoid any activities (such as summer schools, internships or holidays) that might clash with the start of the semester abroad. Our partner universities will not allow you to start late or interrupt your studies.
The choice of modules taught in English will vary depending on the partner university. At some, you will find a wider selection of modules and for other partners these may be limited. You should research the partner universities fully to find what modules you can study. You may find that some universities offer cultural modules designed specifically for international students.
This region is also great for those students who may be considering to learn or expand their language skills. Students doing the full year may be able to take Spanish language courses as part of their studies.
You will be required to study a minimum number of modules:
- semester abroad – 5 modules (equal to 60 Sussex credits)
- year abroad – 10 modules (equal to 120 Sussex credits).
Living costs
Latin America’s cost of living is lower than other regions. It is considered one of the most affordable places for students to study abroad.
Accommodation
Accommodation options differ depending on the partner university. Some institutions will have university-managed housing you can apply to, such as the University de los Andes, although provision is limited.
An alternative option is to live with a family as part of a homestay, which can be a fantastic way to immerse yourself fully in the culture.

Availabilty
Important: Not all of our partner universities are available every year, and the list below is subject to change.
Many of these institutions have very limited availability, so we cannot guarantee places will always be available. Where universities only have 1 or 2 spaces available, we have indicated this with a ‘*’. You are encouraged to keep your options open when selecting the institutions you’re interested in studying at.
