Registering your attendance

You are likely to be asked to  use the SussexMobile App to register attendance at teaching sessions .Your tutors will explain how registers are taken in your modules.

Core attendance for undergraduate students

Your attendance requirements are measured by contact points made up of scheduled teaching and learning activity, including:

  • lectures
  • seminars
  • laboratory sessions
  • workshops
  • any other formal teaching within the timetable.

You should attend all scheduled teaching and learning sessions, and engage as much as you can.

If your attendance falls below a certain level, we may contact you to discuss how to support you. Find out more about issues with attendance.

Core attendance for Master’s students

For the first half of a full-time, year-long Master’s course, classes run between October and April and your attendance will be recorded.

Between May and September, for the second half of your course, you will be still expected to study full-time and your attendance will be monitored monthly through:

  • dissertation supervision meetings
  • meetings with an academic advisor, or
  • attendance at any scheduled teaching and learning activity offered by the University.

The majority of these are expected to take place in-person, with no more than two remote meetings in a row.

You'll need monthly core contact points if you do not complete your course within the initial 12 months – for instance, if you’ve deferred your dissertation submissions or needed to resit any of your assessments.

If you have a Student visa, you should make sure you understand the requirements of your visa sponsorship and are not putting your studies at risk.

Missing classes, seminars or lectures

If you’ve missed a class or other taught session you should:

  • email the tutor in advance to apologise, or as soon as possible afterwards
  • catch up with missed work (you can find some lecture notes online).

It’s very important to stay in touch with us, and let us know when you might be absent, especially if it might be a longer-term absence. If you don’t do this, your School might contact you to make sure you’re OK and get you back on track with your studies.

See more about what to do if you have ongoing issues attending classes.
