Your skills: learn from the Sussex grad who started an online homeware business

Sussex alumna Efua Akumanyi

Sussex Connect is our online e-mentoring and networking platform, where you can request mentorship from Sussex alumni like Efua Akumanyi.

Efua studied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, graduating with a BSc in 2001. After 15 years as a software developer, she launched Furnishful, a shopping discovery site for furniture and homeware.

Efua is passionate about encouraging other women into tech, whether it’s finding jobs in the industry or starting their own business. She is a member of several women in tech groups and speaks on subjects ranging from AI to entrepreneurship.

When asked what advice she would give to current students interested in starting their own business, Efua said:

“Try and gain as much knowledge as you can about different business models and the market you are interested in. Listen to podcasts, read articles, go to events. Then just do it! Don’t wait for everything to be perfect. Finally, network like mad. I have found people to be generally very friendly and willing to help you where they can.”

If you’re looking for support with your future direction, specific skills or building confidence, take a look at Sussex Connect and find someone like Efua to reach out to.
