US Girls Can: try sports with Active US

When someone says the word exercise to you, what’s your usual response? You might already have buckets of confidence or you might think, “I can’t do that”.

Research has shown that fears surrounding physical activity such as sweating, being laughed at and getting changed in the gym are contributors to a gender divide in sport and activity participants.

Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign encourages women to get active while highlighting common fears, in an attempt to normalise and appreciate what women’s bodies can do.

US Girls Can is Active US’s programme to encourage and empower all self-identifying women to take part in sport, no matter what ability. It’s about facing your fears and confronting the reasons that usually make you say no to exercise, and turning them into a big, happy, red-in-the-face yes.

The Active Us team is here to help you along your journey into discovering the physical and mental benefits of being active. Here are some ways to get started.

US Girls Can week: 28 October to 3 November

Starting on Monday 28 October, Active Us will be running surprise, one-off events to celebrate and empower all Sussex girls to get involved.

You can also show your support for the campaign by purchasing an #USGirlsCan tee from the Sport Centre reception for £5.

Regular sessions

Weekly US Girls Can sessions are open to self-identifying women, creating a safe space for women to overcome their fears and enjoy activity. These have proven really popular with students. Activities range across cricket, basketball, football and netball. View the Active US programme and keep an eye on social media for details.

Social media

The team have recently kick-started the @SUSGIRLSCAN Instagram account to showcase the community at Sussex, what’s going on and wider female sporting achievements. You can follow Active US on Facebook too.
