We hope you had a great summer and that you’re looking forward to the term ahead! Awaiting your arrival, we asked some of our wonderful Sussex alumni (former Sussex students) to send through their advice for getting the academic year off to a good start.

Here’s what they had to say:

  1. Missing home is normal, but try not to go back every weekend.
  2. Use the gym on campus – you’ll miss it after graduation.
  3. Make small goals for every week.
  4. Go to a show at ACCA.
  5. You don’t have to drink to have fun!
  6. Find the good spots in the Library.
  7. Join a society or two.
  8. Discover the South Downs with new friends.
  9. Do some work outside of lectures!
  10. Go to all the informative talks about University services.
  11. Don’t be afraid to ask questions in seminars and lectures.
  12. Go for walks in Stanmer Park.
  13. Bring the beginner’s mind.
  14. Take advantage of all the time you have to spend with friends.
  15. Be kind to yourself.
  16. Find something outside of your course that you’re passionate about and get involved.
  17. Don’t bother writing every word down during lectures – focus on what’s not on the slides.
  18. Learn to write a bibliography properly!
  19. Work out what is graded and put most effort into that.
  20. Eat your greens!
