Starting university is exciting but it can also be a bit overwhelming.
You can use this checklist to help keep track of the important activities you need to complete.
It also features various exciting opportunities that are available while you're a Sussex student – pick the activities and events that feel right for you.
- Complete the essentials
Start with the most important tasks you need to complete:
- complete registration online
- if you are an international student on a student visa, come to an in-person registration session so we can confirm your status to study in the UK and issue you with your ID card
- collect your student ID card
- collect the keys for your accommodation (if you are living in university-managed housing)
- Prepare for your studies
Get ready for studying your degree:
- attend your School induction
- visit your School office
- check how to develop your academic skills
- find out about becoming or nominating a Student Rep within the Students’ Union
- Explore activities on and around campus
Begin to experience life as a Sussex student:
- attend the Welcome Celebration Day event on Friday 20 September
- take a tour of campus
- visit the library or take a library tour
- explore Brighton and the local area or take a city sightseeing tour
- Discover student support services
Get the right support during your time here:
- explore the facilities at the Student Centre, your hub for student support services and events
- register with a doctor
- meet your Residential Life Connector (if you are living in University-managed housing)
- Look after your wellbeing
Take part in activities designed to look after your wellbeing:
- visit the Wellbeing tent
- take part in a Sussex Sport activity
- attend a Buddy Scheme event
- Take part in Students’ Union activities

- visit the SU at Falmer House on campus
- join an SU society
- Activate your systems at Sussex
Check that you can log in and access the different digital systems and platforms you’ll need during your studies:
- see what IT support is available
- explore the Student Hub for all the information you need
- log in to Canvas to access resources beyond your lectures and seminars
- log in to Sussex Direct to manage your personal details and access your library account
- find your teaching timetable
- download the SussexMobile App for easy access to your emails and course timetables
