Studying abroad in Asia

Studying abroad in Asia can be a good way to experience a very different culture and open up future job opportunities in this region.

You will still be studying at high-quality universities with a chance to make strong international connections. You will also have the opportunity to travel throughout the region.

Some of our exchange agreements with our Asian partners are subject-specific.

Universities are available in the following destinations:

Academic programme

Some of our partners have a different semester system. You may need to travel abroad as early as July (such as with Monash University in Malaysia) or August (with Nanyang Technological University in Singapore). You may also finish earlier or later than you would at Sussex. Contact the Sussex Abroad team for more information.

The choice of modules taught in English will vary depending on the partner university. Some institutions will have a wider selection of modules and others may be limited. You should research the partner universities fully to find out what modules you can study. At each of these universities, you will be required to study a minimum number of credits for the year or semester. See the tables below for details.

Living costs

The cost of living in Asia varies depending on the specific country where you study. For example, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea will be more expensive than Malaysia or Thailand. How much you will spend will depend on things such as your rent and bills, food, commuting, and your own lifestyle. It is important to spend time working out a budget to meet all financial requirements.

Accommodation

With certain institutions, you may need to be very pro-active in finding your own accommodation. The partner university website will have resources to help you with this. If the partner university is offering you university-managed accommodation, this may be very different from what you are used to. You may be sharing room with other students, or cooking facilities may be limited. Make sure you fully research your options. Our Sussex Abroad team can also try to put you in touch with current or previous study abroad students for advice and recommendations.

How to apply to study abroad

You'll apply for a place through the Sussex Abroad team, usually in the first term of the year before you are planning to go abroad.

The institutions you can apply to are split into two categories (A and B), indicated in the tables below. There is no difference in the standard of education between the two. Category A universities tend to be the more popular destinations. To avoid disappointment, you must only include a maximum of two category A universities on your application. You should be prepared to study at any of the universities listed in your application.

Find out how to apply.

Availabilty

Important: Not all of our partner universities are available every year, and the list below is subject to change. The subjects available may be subject to change too.

Many of these institutions have very limited availability, so we cannot guarantee places will always be available. Where universities only have 1 or 2 spaces available, we have indicated this with a ‘*’. You are encouraged to keep your options open when selecting the institutions you’re interested in studying at.
