Your wellbeing: try new sports with Active US

Student playing indoor cricket

Sussexsport is your sports service and we manage the two on-campus gyms, group exercise classes and courses, sports halls, tennis courts and pitches, with a selection of great value memberships for Sussex students.

We also offer a casual programme of social sports, organised and led by students like you, called Active US.

Active US will run throughout term time and you don’t need a membership or experience to take part.

The activities are designed to be social, fun and open to all, so don’t worry if you haven’t tried something before – this is your chance.

This year, in addition to our relaxed social sessions, we’ve introduced some development sessions and leagues. So, if you want to progress or take part in a bit of friendly competition, you can too.

We’ve added some new safety measures to make sure that everything is Covid secure. This means extra sessions for shorter times, so that we can have fewer people in each activity to ensure safe social distancing and to give us time to regularly clean equipment.

You’ll also need to book ahead of every session you’d like to attend. You can do this quickly and easily using the University’s online shop.

Activities include:

  • volleyball
  • basketball
  • badminton
  • football
  • squash
  • running (beginners, Couch to 5k and experienced)
  • netball
  • cricket
  • cheerleading.

After a chance introduction to volleyball at secondary school, our student Activator Fran, who is a medical student in BSMS, fell in love with the game. She now leads our Active US volleyball sessions alongside her studies.

Fran has built a community and made friends through the sport, and it’s been a huge part of her student experience. She said:

"Realising how fun and sociable volleyball was kept me coming back to training each week.

‘The more teams I’ve been lucky to be a part of, the better my educational experience has been. I’ve learned so much, met incredible people and travelled to so many places thanks to this game; I can’t imagine how my university or college years would have been without it.’

Active US sessions start from Monday 28 September. Find out how to get involved and visit the Sussexsport pages for more information on student sport, fitness and wellbeing at Sussex.
